Reportage “Bergamo Field Hospital”
27.04.20. At the beginning of the covid-19 pandemia, a field hospital was built in Bergamo (Italy), on the site of the Bergamo exhibition. The hospital had 142 beds and was divided into three areas: green, yellow and red. Inside the hospital’s red zone, where the sickest patients are treated, there were almost as many Russian medical staff as patients: 32 military doctors and nurses and 8 interpreters, all sent by Moscow in a controversial aid gesture. Volunteer medics from Emergency, an Italian NGO who worked on the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, and medical teams from Bergamo’s Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital which bore the brunt in the first devastating phase of this region’s outbreak, staffed the field facility.
